“How was your vacation?”

“I’m not sure I would classify it as a vacation.  It was more of an expedition and I’m not exactly Ferdinand Magellan.”

Anticipating time away from the office and the daily routine is nearly as rewarding as taking off.  We plan and we wait.  We look forward with great expectations.  Visions of lifelong memories being made and of unknown places dance in our minds in the days and weeks leading up to departure.

When my partner left for a sailing trip some years ago, he did so with the attitude that while life is too short to sail, it was worth trying at least once.  He came back with enough stories to keep me laughing for weeks.  From the storms to the sharks to the lack of sleep and cramped quarters, the comedic tales were endless.

His first day back brought from me the usual question, “How was your vacation?”

His response started long blow by blow accounts of his trip.  He replied, “I’m not sure I would classify it as a vacation.  It was more of an expedition and I’m not exactly Ferdinand Magellan.”

Vacations, like life, can throw an occasional curve even in spite of well laid plans.  It is best to recognize that while we anticipate calm and beautiful seas, there will be times when we may be forced to circumnavigate the globe.

When prepared, we can help others through “straits” that are difficult to sail.
