“Dumb parts properly connected yield smart results.”

“At which end of this assertion do we fall?”

The first line in this edition of “They Said It” was actually part of a presentation provided by a senior executive during the explanation of a new reorganization that was being announced.  For all of you who have experienced these sorts of things (who hasn’t?), this reorganization followed the typical script.

On the evening prior to the public and all employee announcement, a large group of managers were called together to see final results of the corporate restructuring.  We had all been through this before.  We also had input during many of the initial planning sessions.  Revelatory news was not expected.  The only surprise came when we saw who would be delivering the news.  It was to be an executive not particularly known for tact or compassion.  He lived up to his reputation when we heard him read a bold sentence displayed at the bottom of one of the presentation slides: “Dumb parts properly connected yield smart results.”  We were all a bit stunned by this statement, but one voice amongst us did not hesitate to question out loud, “At which end of your assertion do WE fall?”

Stung by this direct question and oblivious that there would be offense taken to his theory, the executive remained quiet for what seemed like five minutes.  A barely audible voice whispered, referring to the individual who had made the inquiry, “More questions like that one and he may not find himself at either end.”

When you aren’t sure whether your saddle is securely in place on the horse, it is best not to kick him.
